Peat Moss

Geographic Range:
Eastern United States and parts of Canada

Habitat:
Peatlands and bogs, areas with high rainfall and low temperatures

Physical description:
It carpets the ground in the woods and grows near the bases of trees.

Reproduction:
It's typically asexual; bits break off and re-grow elsewhere. Sometimes it is capable of reproducing sexually via spores.


Cool Facts:
Sphagnum moss leaves are only one cell thick. They are made up of large empty, dead hyaline cells and narrow, living green cells containing chloroplasts.
